Clinico-Histomorphological Correlation of Spectrum of Lesions Seen In Hysterectomy Specimens at a Teaching Institute in South-Eastern UP | |

Background: Hysterectomy is the second most commonly performed major surgical procedure in females worldwide frequently done for treatment of benign and malignant conditions of female genital tract. Various methods to perform hysterectomy are: Abdominal, Vaginal and Laparoscopic. Amongst these, Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH) is most commonly performed worldwide. Commonest indication being Benign Myomas of uterus. Aim and Objective: To analyse age-wise distribution and correlate the clinical and histo-morphological findings seen among the wide spectrum of lesions noted in the hysterectomy specimens at a tertiary care centre. Material and Method: A prospective study done over a period of one and half year from January 2023 to July 2024. 200 hysterectomy specimens were received and diagnosed. Clinical and histopathological features were studied and correlated to form a final diagnosis. Results: Out of 200 hysterectomy cases, 185 cases showed a prevalence amongst the age group of 41-50 years (68cases) (n- 34%). Maximum number of lesions were observed in Endomyometrium. Amongst the findings recorded in endometrium, the highest number of cases were reported as atrophic endometrium (74cases) (n-23%) while myometrium showed a preponderance for fibroids (40cases) (n-20%). Cervix showed the commonest lesion as chronic cervicitis(187cases) (n-93%) and the adnexal structures predominantly showed non neoplastic lesions. Conclusion: Hysterectomy remains the procedure of choice amongst the middle-aged females presenting with complaints of abnormal uterine bleeding with myometrium being the most common site of pathology. It is important that every hysterectomy specimen should be sent for a histopathological examination to rule out any incidental finding as well as provide a definitive diagnosis. |
