Introduction: Urinarybladder tumours accounts for 3% of global tumour diagnoses. Urothelial tumours constitutes 90% of urinary bladder tumours. The objective of the study to correlate the expression of GATA3 with histological type and grade in urinary bladder neoplasms. Materials and Methods: The tissues received were fixed, processed and routine haematoxylin & eosin staining was done to know the histological type and grade of lesion. This was followed by immunohistochemical staining with GATA3 using mouse monoclonal antibody. Only nuclear staining was considered as positive. Integrated score for GATA3 expression was calculated by multiplying the staining intensity with percentage of positive cells. Results: All the 60 cases of urinary bladder neoplasms were urothelial neoplasms. Positive GATA3 expression was seen in 63.33% of cases of urothelial neoplasms. GATA3 expression was significantly correlated with histological grade (p value- 0.000) and muscularispropria invasion (p value- 0.000) with mild or none expression in high grade and invasive tumours as compared to low grade and non invasive tumours. Conclusion: Moderate to strong GATA3 expression was seen in papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP) and low grade non invasiveurothelial carcinoma, whereas none to mild expression seen in high grade non invasive and invasive urothelial carcinoma. Thus expression of GATA3 decreases with increasing grade of tumor and muscularispropria invasion. Therefore these findings suggests that GATA3 plays an important role in the prevention of bladder cancer progression and can be used as a prognostic marker. |
