Background:Unknown iron deficiency anemia without symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract is a well-known sign of celiac disease (CD). The present study was conducted to assess celiac disease in children with iron-deficiency anemia. Materials & Methods:66 children of 1 to 14 years of age with iron deficiency anemia of both genderswere divided into 2 groups of 33 each. Group I comprised children with anemia and group II had healthy children without anemia. Results: Group I had 20 males and 13 females and group II had 18 males and 15 females. The mean height for age (z score) was -1.42 and -1.14, weight for age (z score) was -1.04 and -0.85, weight for height (z score) was -0.46 and -0.17 and midarm circumference was 15.1 cm and 16.2 cm in group I and II respectively. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Children who are anemic are much more likely to have celiac disease.
