Background: Propofol is a rapidly acting intravenous anaesthetic agent which is widely used in short cases and day care surgery as well. But pain on propofol injection can be a distressing factor and hence assessment of Pain on Propofol Injection with pretreatment of various agents being studied. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Ketamine, Lignocaine and Mixture of Ketamine and Lignocaine as pretreatment for pain on propofol injection. Method: A total of 150 patients of ASA I and II aged 18 – 60 years without any co morbidities were included in our study. The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups of 50 each. Group K received 0.2 mg / kg of Ketamine, group L received 40 mg of Lignocaine, whereas group KL received 0.1 mg/kg ketamine + 20 mg Lignocaine intravenously. The pain intensity was assessed among the 3 groups. Results: The mean pain score was significantly lower in the group having mixture of Ketamine (0.1 mg / kg)+Lignocaine (20 mg), followed by the group in which Ketamine (0.2mg/kg) was used alone .Alone use of Lignocaine was not proved to be effective in alleviating pain due to propofol injection. Conclusion: Present study concludes that combination of 0.1 mg/kg of Ketamine with 20 mg lignocaine is much effective followed by ketamine 0.2 mg /kg and lignocaine 40 mg alone in preventing pain from propofol injection. |
