Assessment of road traffic accident cases

Background: An accident is a sudden, unanticipated, and unintentional event that happens under unanticipated conditions. RTA is the leading cause of death for people under 50 in developed nations. The present study was conducted to assess road traffic accident cases. Materials & Methods: 120 victims of the road traffic accidents of both genders were selected. A pre-tested proforma specially designed for this purpose was used for interviewing the accident victims, either in the casualty or in the wards of Hospital. Relatives or attendants were interviewed when the victims' conditions did not justify it. Personal identifying information, the time, date, and day of the RTA, the kind of vehicle involved, the protective gear worn, and the classification of road users were among the data gathered. Results: Out of 120 victims, 70 were males and 50 were females. Occupation of victims was farmer in 19, labourer in 35, student in 21, and housewife in 45. Educational status was illiterate in 35, matriculate in 58 and graduate and above in 27. Type of vehicle was two- wheelers in 36, four- wheelers in 72 and bicycle in 12. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: The most of the victims of road traffic accidents were labourers, had low education level and four vehicles were the most common cause of accidents.
